First Collaboration between
Hong Chi Association and Art Basel Hong Kong
Being and Belonging
Hong Chi Association (HCA) is honoured to be invited to participate at Art Basel Hong Kong this year, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 28 – 30 March 2024. The Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving people of all ages and grades of intellectual disabilities and their families in Hong Kong, will host a group exhibition of artworks by HCA students at Art Basel's world-class platform for artistic discovery and dialogue.
Being & Belonging is a thought-provoking exhibition that celebrates the artistic talents of intellectually disabled students and trainees and exploring the themes of identity, existence, connection and acceptance. Through a rich tapestry of artistic styles, mediums, and subjects, each artwork bears the unique perspective of the artist’s distinctive outlooks.
Central to the exhibition’s narrative is the exploration of the complex relationship between the self and belonging. From vibrant paintings that explode with colour and positivity to canvases embodying inner struggles and resilience, the drawings serve as powerful testaments to the artists’ lived experiences through creative expression. Offering windows into and beyond their inner worlds, the series of works invites viewers to contemplate the universal human quest for a place to call home, both literally and metaphorically.
“Being & Belonging is the inaugural partnership between Hong Chi Association and Art Basel Hong Kong, a partnership that not only celebrates the power of art to transcend boundaries and ignite conversations, but aims to foster a more inclusive art world, enriching the well-being of everyone in the community,” says Hong Chi Association’s Chairman, Mr. Edward Yau Tang-wah, GBS, JP.
In the official exhibition’s “Exchange Circle” on Saturday, 30 March, themed Being & Belonging – The Art World of Hong Chi’s Children, three artists trained at the Association will join guests to share their experiences in living with their disability and art-making. The artists will showcase their works through interactive dialogues and live demonstrations.
HCA is thrilled to join Art Basel Hong Kong this year to ignite a radiant transformation with the art world. We warmly invite the media to join us in celebrating the remarkable talents of this group of artists who seek to foreground the vibrant tapestry of physical and intellectual diversity in the world of art, as we embrace a vibrant tapestry of diversity and unity in the realm of art.
