Hong Chi Association is the only school-running organization in Hong Kong that operates schools for children with mild, moderate and severe intellectual disabilities at the same time. Its 14 special schools provide 2,211 places and 269 boarding places. The number of graduates this year is 153. Hong Chi Association has always been adhering to the spirit of "supporting intellectual disabilities" and is committed to providing a professional, caring and inclusive educational environment for people with intellectual disabilities of different ages, so that every student can receive comprehensive support and guidance in learning, life and personal development.
The Hong Chi Association Joint School Graduation Ceremony for the 2023/24 school year was successfully held on May 23 at the Grand Theater of Shek Mun Heung Yee Kuk Building. Ms. LEUNG Yee Lee, Maggie, Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department (Rehabilitation and Medical Social Services), served as the officiating guest, witnessing the results of the students’ hard work and sharing their joy. In her speech, Ms. Liang Qili fully affirmed the efforts made by Hong Chi Association and its schools in the field of special education, and pointed out that the government attaches great importance to support for people with disabilities and has continuously allocated more resources to strengthen rehabilitation services in recent years. The estimated expenditure on rehabilitation services in this year's budget reaches 12.3 billion, accounting for one-tenth of the overall expenditure. The Social Welfare Department also set up dedicated teams in 21 district support centers for persons with disabilities in Hong Kong in April this year to continue to provide training and care for school leavers.
Mrs Betty IP-TSANG Chui-hing, JP, Vice Chairman of the Education Executive Committee of the Hong Chi Association, thanked the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council for approving the funding in late March this year to renovate the Lions Club Morningside School. The new school building is expected to be completed in 2028.
Hong Chi Association has been committed to strengthening the communication skills of students with autism. The "Autism and Communication" international exchange conference organized by the Association and co-organized by the Department of Educational Psychology of CUHK was held in late July last year. More than 700 local participants, from the Greater Bay Area and around the world were invited to share their experiences in supporting and strengthening communication with autistic students with low oral language, and received positive and positive reviews.
In addition, we firmly believe that every student has his or her own unique potential, especially in sports and arts. For example, Liu Xiaoyi from Tuen Mun Chen Kong School won the bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly at this year's Citi World Para Swimming Series (Italy). Xu Leer, a student from Chen Fai School in Tuen Mun, achieved outstanding results by winning two gold medals in the 8th China Ice and Snow Sports Season for People with Disabilities - Special Olympics Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing Competition. The "Hong Chi Sports and Arts Academy" established last year hopes to raise more resources in the future to provide comprehensive and continuous training for people with intellectual disabilities in sports, music, dance, art, etc., from discovery to cultivation.
Hong Chi School also attaches great importance to national security education and the identification of teachers and students with the country and Chinese culture. In addition to strengthening curriculum coordination and planning, organizing activities to let school directors and staff understand constitutional order, the spirit of the rule of law and other related issues, in March this year, the association A total of 40 co-workers from the Ministry of Education and affiliated schools also visited special schools and "Anji Play" kindergarten in Baiyun District, Guangzhou. Through exchanges with domestic educators, the co-workers learned about the curriculum design and teaching strategies of special education in the Mainland. I also have a deeper understanding and knowledge.
The annual Hong Chi Association Joint School Graduation Ceremony allows us to review the growth of students together, and also express our gratitude to the principals and all teaching staff of each school for their hard work. We hope that we will continue to work together to create more impossible things for students.
