June 11, 2024 - Hong Chi Association discovered in the morning that the servers of two of its District Support Centres for Persons with Disabilities, located in North District and Kwun Tong, had been hacked.
The hack caused system outages and some internal files were locked. Upon discovering the incident, Hong Chi immediately disconnected the servers and reported the case to the Hong Kong Police Force. The association also notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data and the Social Welfare Department.
Preliminary investigations show the hacked files involved personal data of approximately 2,000 service users, family members, volunteers and staff. The specific details are still under investigation.
Hong Chi condemns all forms of illegal online activities. The association has taken immediate measures to minimize impact and strengthened security to prevent further hacking.
Hong Chi is actively contacting affected individuals to advise heightened vigilance against potential misuse or unlawful use of leaked data. Users are warned not to open suspicious emails, messages or links, and to enhance online security. Assistance is available by contacting unit staff.
Hong Chi deeply regrets this incident and apologizes to those affected. The public is urged to protect any leaked personal data related to Hong Chi and immediately notify the association to aid police investigation.
