Upgrading of Hong Chi Jockey Club Kwong Fuk Workshop provides a modernized workshop for Hong Chi trainees integration in the community


The first Hong Chi sheltered workshop, Hong Chi Jockey Club Kwong Fuk Workshop, was established in 1987. It provided comprehensive and diverse vocational training and internship opportunities for 191 students with intellectual disabilities. With fund HK$29 million generously donated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the workshop was upgraded and modernization with enhancement works.  A grand opening ceremony was held to celebrate the official opening of the workshop on March 2. Officiating guests of the ceremony includes Mr. Edward Yau, GBS, JP, Chairman of Hong Chi Association Council, Ms. Nelly Li, Senior Manager, Charities of The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Ms. CHAN Sin-yee, Assistant District Social Welfare Officer (Tai Po/North), Social Welfare Department. Trainees of Hong Chi District Support Centre (North District) and Hong Chi Jockey Club Kwong Fuk Workshop performed energetic Hip Hop and singing respectively to celebrate the official opening of the workshop. 

 

Kwong Fuk Workshop has been refurbished with a modern touch. The workshop is dedicated to floral services and laundry services, brand new services including photography services, CAFÉ and UV printing and laser cutting services upon enhancement of the workshop. The expansion of diversified business of the workshop aims to increase job opportunities for Hong Chi trainees, in alignment with their developmental needs, and facilitate their integration into the community.  

 

For photography services, Hong Chi trainees learn composition techniques, lighting techniques and assist in set up. The photography team has helped to capture staff identification photos and event highlights in last year. They have achieved accomplishment throughout these experience.

 

In addition, there are more than ten Hong Chi trainees undergoing cafe training in the CAFÉ, learning to serve customers and applying their culinary skills and hospitality into practice, which has significantly boosted their confidence.

 

Regarding UV Printing and Laser Cutting Training and Services, Hong Chi trainees learn to utilize computer software for UV printing and laser cutting. They also learn to operate the machine, change materials, assemble components, and complete products. This training enables them to stay updated with the latest technology and advancements.

 

The support from the Social Welfare Department and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to the association for this enhancement project, marks as a milestone in the evolvement of sheltered workshop.  The project aligns with the goals of the Social Welfare Department's Pilot Scheme on Vocational Rehabilitation Services, aiming to provide people with intellectual disabilities with more job options and training opportunities, while enriching their lives and promotes their integration into the community.
