Art Connects Us All

"Trainees use their brush strokes and colours to tell stories on the canvas, sharing the commonalities in moments of life that we all share."

Curtis Fung is a trainee with mild intellectual disability who loves to paint. His painting combines his passionate desire to express originality and exuberant colour mixes that creates his signature style. He used to draw things related to his daily life, and started to explore broader themes after receiving training in The Jockey Club Hong Chi Siu Sai Wan Workshop. ”I love to draw frogs with colour pencils. Frogs are fun animals to sketch, so are dinosaurs.” said Curtis. He is excited to share photos of his work, as well as his joy and passion in drawing with people around him.

Drawing is Happiness

With a piece of paper and a box of color pencils, Curtis can fully indulge into his passion for painting. “Apart from drawing his favourite animals, Curtis also loves drawing snow mountains with Chinese ink. He looks so excited when he has a paintbrush in his hand. You can feel his love for painting. Curtis shows his scrupulousness and patient character when he is performing routine daily tasks and painting in the workshop. He does his painting with all his heart. You can find some fine details in his art pieces even if the style looks simple and casual.” said Ms Choi, the tutor of the drawing class.

Artistic Talent Unfolds

Curtis is a fast learner and he is highly adaptable to new drawing skills. He pays full attention to the brief instructions given by the trainer, then draws the rest of the details freehand from his imagination. Last year, he was invited to show his art piece named “The village of wild plum trees” in the “[Paint]scape” exhibition organized by the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. He spent 2 hours in creating a peaceful scene of a quiet village with Chinese ink, which was a vivid demonstration of his creativity and artistic talent that had deeply impressed the audience.

Connecting Us with The Art

Apart from painting, Curtis also designs handicraft and accessories for the Workshop with positive feedback received from members of the public. Some of his top-selling designs such as Fuji Mountain pendants and cute animal rings are sold out at times. We believe that with appropriate training and given the opportunities, trainees can showcase their abilities and talents to enhance public understanding of people with intellectual disabilities, so as to foster an inclusive community.
